Flat roofs require different care and maintenance than slanted ones do. If you have a business or a commercial building with a flat roof, here’s what you need to know to make it last as long as possible. If you have any questions or need some help, contact us at Watershed Roofing & Restoration. We would love to help you take care of your flat roof all year long.
Trim Your Trees
If nearby trees have branches that stretch out over your roof, trim them back. You don’t want them to fall on the roof, drop extra snow on the roof, or scratch it in any way. If you live in a location where moss grows on most trees, you don’t want them to get on your roof, either.
Clean it Up
Since debris won’t slide off the edge of your flat roof the way it would on a slanted roof, cleaning the roof falls to you. You’ll want to be gentle while you’re up there, though, because you don’t want to damage your roof. Try to go up at least twice a year as well as after major storms. Remove dirt, leaves, and any other debris that you find up there.
Watch Water Weight
Snow may not seem that heavy but it can be too much for a flat roof to handle. If you get more than a few inches of snow and it doesn’t seem to be melting fast, go up and remove some of it manually. Make sure you know how much weight your roof was designed to bear and don’t put more up there than it can handle.
Don’t Let Leaks Go
Even a small leak can cause major damage if you let it go too long. Call for help as soon as you notice a leak or even a crack. Your roofing professionals will be able to fix it before it causes more problems for you.
Drainage is Key
If water is pooling on the roof, there’s a problem with your drainage system. It may have gotten clogged or you may need to do more extensive work to fix it. Standing water can damage the roof to take care of the problem before it hurts you.
